Monday Musings 25/11/2019

I find myself conflicted  today, on the one hand I can understand and agree with all of the things that Mr Corben wants to do, but putting on my investment advisers hat I dread the adverse impact that paying for them will have on companies in the UK which will impact on the value of pensions, ISAs, and all of the other types of investments that are equity based. The other area which should be of concern to all of us who are self employed either as sole traders or via a limited company are the tax proposals that Mr McDonald proposes which will have a direct impact on us. Although I also think that Mr Johnson sometimes parts company with the truth and does not have the same social ambitions as Mr Corben his financial commitments do, from an investment advisers point of view, make more sense.

Turning as I must to the markets the FTSE100 had a positive week as the market followed  the polls which point to a Conservative win, which will come as a huge relief in the City. As you may have read several power companies have established offshore entities to protect their shareholders in order to try and protect their shareholders. While this tactic cannot stop privatisation, it may force the government to pay a higher price for the assets. I know that “offshore” has nasty connotations but in this case, it really is a tactic to help all the ordinary folk who own shares in these companies. The rest of the world’s main markets, except surprisingly the Hang Seng, suffered reverses last week.

Market movements of the week

FTSE 100 up 0.33%

DOW JONES down 0.46%

NIKKEI down 0.82%

HANG SENG up 1.02%

SHANGHAI down 0.21%

CAC 40 down 0.78%

DAX down 0.59% ffffffff
