I had a strange encounter on Facebook this week (sounds silly, bear with me…). A new mum put a post up on a local group asking for help. She said.

I actually had a momentary pang of sympathy for Sunak this week. Its unlikely to happen again. To explain: I don’t know if you saw, but he was being ridiculed all over the internet for not being able to use a hammer properly. There’s videos everywhere of him using the side of the hammer head, which does look very bizarre and some of the parodies that have cropped up have been very funny. But when you see the whole clip, its clear he’s not at fault. Or at least not as daft as he looked. He’s at a Yorkshire jewellery making studio and the beginning of the clip clearly shows the person he’s sat next to instructing him to use the side of the hammer. Isn’t it funny what a full picture can do? To paraphrase the well-known song, what a difference perspective makes.
The same might be said of the US markets at the moment. Superficially they appear to be positive, but it doesn’t take a lot of looking under the bonnet to see any positive performance is hinging entirely on just seven stocks, and all of those are the big tech firms like Facebook / Meta and Telsa. With most of the trade press still calling the future of the US markets ‘uncertain’ and the current performance of the dollar dithering this lack of diverse impact does little to calm nerves.
So, to the markets –
