One of the challenges with writing these is not so much finding something to write about, it’s that there is so much I could write about! I know what excites.

In the words of Alice Cooper, “school’s out for summer”! Last week saw parents, like me, sitting through Year 6 leavers plays and assemblies, watched our not-so-little ones give teary (sometimes) goodbyes to friends they will probably see again over the Sumer holidays and exit those Junior School gates for the last time in signature-scrawled shirts. The obligatory ‘first day of year 1 and last day of year 6’ side by side comparison photos have been cropping up all over social media.
Those of you with older children will be turning your faces towards A-levels, apprenticeships, first jobs and University, or maybe even gap years. It’s a time that makes many of us think about how much they have grown and how times have changed.
For many of our clients, saving for their children’s future is a primary concern. Interestingly, on the Estate Planning side of the business, I often encounter grown children encouraging parents to spend their heard earned savings enjoying their retirement.
Here’s an interesting question for you – would you like to invest IN your children (or indeed grandchildren) or FOR them? There’s no right or wrong answer but its worth thinking about.
You could invest in your children by contributing to the cost of their education, support in setting up a first home or business, investing in their personal growth or experiences so that you give them the best opportunities possible to stand on their own two feet. There are many ways to do this and good financial advice can make sure you do it tax efficiently too.
Or perhaps you want to make investments on their behalf, using tools like JISAs or trusts, but need to know how to do so properly and tax efficiently. Did you know you can set up pensions for your children or grandchildren? There are so many options available to you but you need sound financial advice to find the right one.
So to the markets….
