Its Independence Day! In America, obviously. As they celebrate separating from the UK in America, Nicola S is making her bid for bringing freedom for Scotland again over here. Will she have more success this time? It’s not really for me to say.
Independence has been a theme on the home front too. My son is having his first trip away without parents – the school junior leavers trip. A whole week of friends and fun in the forest and there is, ladies and gentlemen, even (gasp!) a sweet shop! Those poor, poor teachers… wish them luck everyone.
Whether its kids, nieces and nephews, siblings, spouses or parents, we all have people we want to look after. One of the great worries can be what can we do to support the people important to us once we’re no longer around? There’s a lot that can be done. Probably two of the most important tools are your pension and your life insurance. Pensions are not only vital for us to have to ensure we have an income in retirement (state pension really won’t cut it) but they can also be a great tool for passing money to your nearest and dearest inheritance tax free.
Life assurance, especially with critical illness cover, can help to smooth the roughest of bumps. When your family is experiencing the worst news, taking away their financial headache is an incredible gift because money will be the last thing they want to have to worry about.
Like so many things in life both are best started young – life assurance certainly is cheaper the younger and healthier you are. How many of us leave it too late to really get the best out of these? How many of us have younger friends and family who could benefit from some sage advice now?
