May #3 Firstly, please excuse an indulgence. Some of you may remember when my father passed, we asked for donations to the charity War Child at his funeral. The plight.

May #2
In a completely unsurprising turn of events, the Tories have not done well at the recent local elections. Can you feel the shock waves running through Parliament? No, neither can I. Following a loss of 10 councils and 474 councillors there can be no doubt the country has made its feelings known. They’ve been criticised in recent days for trying to put a positive spin on things by reminding voters that we’re ‘technically’ out of the ‘technical’ recession no-one ever 100% agreed we were in, and that we’re very close to the Bank of England’s target inflation rate of 2%, but frankly what else can they do? Other than trying to deflect our attention with Rwanda or ‘woke’ politics, there really is nothing to hide behind.
Add this to reports from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (the OECD) confirming that the UK is set to be the slowest growing economy in the G7 next year, and was the second slowest last year behind Germany – finally a title we’re happy to concede to them, and to reports that this will be the first parliament where disposable incomes are less at the end of its leadership than they were at the beginning. Not a great accolade for the party that’s meant to be all about economics.
But Labour shouldn’t crow too hard. They didn’t sore ahead with a landslide of votes and we could still be looking at a hung parliament in the general election. Hung parliaments don’t tend to be great for investment performance. When investors lack confidence in a government’s ability to pass legislation and enact policy fearing cross party infighting, they are slow to invest, which impacts growth. However if a strong enough leader emerges to steer us through, the opposite could be true.
Economically things do seem to be improving, very slowly, but its not party time yet.
So, to the markets –
