Stepping into the shoes of someone you have looked up to all your life is never an easy task. But I’m finding that task is made easier by the support around you. There are roles to be fulfilled, and a balancing act to be maintained. Do you do that role exactly the same way as your predecessor, or bring your own personality to it? Decisions I’ve been wrestling with for a few weeks now.
The truth is that I could never 100% fill Dad’s shoes in the way that he did, and let’s be honest I’d have been pretty horrified if he’d ever strutted around in my stilettos, so the musings may take on a slightly different flavour from here on in, but they will hopefully continue his spirit of communication with a wry eye on world events.
Over the past few weeks I’ve been watching events in the Ukraine with the same horror that Dad felt, and traced the impact on the world markets. I can only imagine what Dad’s response would have been to the plans to send our refugees to Rwanda. And let’s not even touch on what he would have thought of Boris’s response to being the only sitting Prime Minister to be found to have broken the Law. Quite the accolade. While the markets react and try to keep up with unfolding events, we continue to assume a defensive position, but keep a close eye on their progress.
