What a difference a day makes. As you have probably realised over the last week or so it only takes one act of international moment to impact on world markets. After the strike by the USA oil prices jumped as did the price of gold. In fact if I had been in a panic I might well have been selling down equities and buying a fund such as the BlackRock Gold and General fund, but the truth is that trying to judge the markets on such a fine time frame is often a bad move and you could find yourself in a worse position than you were in the first place. As you will see the UK markets were slightly down at the end of the week but still well ahead of where they were before the election result. Everything I am reading leads me to believe that the move we made from commercial property to infrastructure funds was the right call. This is being driven by the emphasis that the government is making of infrastructure projects.
I met a guy last week who runs his own portfolio on the Hargreaves Lansdown platform, and uses their Wealth 50 funds to select his investments. He was shocked top find that he had chosen funds that performed badly. This week’s Sunday Times had an article showing that more than half of the funds they recommended had achieved lower returns than average for their sector.
So, to the markets
FTSE 100 down 0.45%
DOW JONES up 0.66%
NASDAQ up 1.75%
S&P 500 up 0.94%
NIKKEI up 0.82%
HANG SENG up 0.66%
SHANGHAI up 0.28%
CAC 40 down 0.12%
DAX up 2.00%
I had a strange encounter on Facebook this week (sounds silly, bear with me…). A new mum put a post up on a local group asking for help. She said.
