A Mixed Bag – Monday Musings 12/07/2021
I thought I would wait until the football competition had ended and one way or the other to compare the result to the markets. I had hoped to say that although it has taken longer, like the markets there is always a recovery. Sadly, unlike the markets there has only been a partial recovery so far, although the fundamentals are in place, great players, there is still a certain amount of what I would, in investment terms, call market sentiment holding the team back. What I mean is that with the media continuously harping on the historic penalty results, even though many of the players weren’t even born in the time frame the media love, it must impact on these amazing youngsters let alone their great manager. On a lighter note, having watched Spain losing to the Italians with my Spanish wife we had the whole family in Tarragona rooting for England last night and they were as upset as us at the result. The only conciliation was that it hadn’t been a Spain verses England final which could have resulted in some marital strife.
As far as the markets are concerned a mixed bag this week with the FTSE100 marginally down, the USA markets all up and the French and German markets down and up respectively. In the Far East the Shanghai moved ahead but the NIKKEI went backwards, I think the problems with the Olympics may have contributed to this. IT seems that sport ain’t helping at the moment. As you will see the Hang Seng had a poor week but if you think about the political turmoil in Hong Kong this shouldn’t surprise us.
So, to the markets
